As a freshman, she was mentored by former Aztec basketball star Tammy Blackburn who still works at SDSU Alumni, but also moonlights as a television sports reporter and analyst with ESPN, CBS Sports Network and the Pac-12 Network. She credits her SDSU education with helping to develop her reporting skills. “You don’t generally have a script in front of you it’s really see it, say it, talk about what’s happening behind you.” “Breaking news is exciting because you have to think on your feet,” she observed. She remembers being impressed by the achievements of the awardees who were being honored. In her college days as a member of Associated Students, Stafford had attended the award program. “I’m incredibly honored to be participating in this ceremony,” she said. On September 14, she will serve as emcee for the 45th SDSU Alumni Awards of Distinction ceremony at Coasterra on Harbor Island. Now a reporter for the morning news at NBC 7 San Diego, Stafford is the successful broadcast journalist she had dreamed of becoming since childhood. These days she is enjoying the payoff from her good choices and hard work. “It’s not like the most picturesque or fabulous place but that’s where I spent most of my (on-campus) life,” she said.
